Detailed description of Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon, Legends Course

Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon, previously named East Valley Golf Course is a Public 36-hole golf facility. The facility has two 18-hole golf courses. They are Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon, Champoins Course and Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon, Legendss Course. Home of the Southern California PGA The Champions and The Legends-What better terms describe two world- class courses with each hole named after one of golf's greatest champions or most celebrated legends. The golf course facility was purchased by Morongo Casino in the Fall of 2010.

The courses that are now Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon opened for play in 2000. The courses were designed by architects Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley.

The Champions layout features gently rolling terrain and is distinguished by its open, native feel and rugged natural bunkering. The Champions Course at Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon plays to 7,377 yards from the tips and is a par-72 layout. The course rating is 76.5 and the slope rating is 141. Playing from 5,274 to 7,377 yards, the Champions track designed in a more traditional parkland style has rolling tree-lined fairways and greens of medium size and varying speed.

The Legends is a charming loop with riparian streams and flush with oak woodlands. It features a more classic style of bunkering. The Legends Course at Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon plays to 7,442 yards from the tips and is a par-72 layout. The course rating is 76.6 and the slope rating is 144. The Legends is a links-styled track that plays from 5,169 to 7,442 yards. The rolling fairways are generally open, and lead to medium sized greens of varying speed.

Both courses offer five sets of tees to challenge golfers of all handicaps and skill levels.

It's quite a drive from my home but considering the conditions and the price it's worth driving a couple of times a year. The staff were very friendly and it was not crowded on a Saturday morning (maybe because a tournament was starting at noon). The greens were very hard for me to figure out, and watch out for the long grass in the rough - - it'll grab your wedge when chipping.

Played this course on an UnderPar coupon which allowed me to also play the other 18 holes - the Champions. Of the two, I prefer the this one - the Legends. Wonderful layout that goes up and down and around some natural hills. The green complexes are very challenging with lots of contours and very deep bunkering. Our starter warned us that the rough was very deep and he wasn't wrong. In fact, the over-seeded ryegrass rough was way too deep and that is my only complaint. It was easily 4-5" deep and every time anyone went in the rough it resulted in a long search just to find the ball. This course is challenging enough without the deep rough. Otherwise, you will never get bored playing this course and each hole looks different from the others. They do have tee boxes that can make this course very long but it appears they rarely use them. However, I would recommend you pick a length that is normal for you or even a bit shorter as many approach shots are going to a green perched a bit uphill. I would play this course all the time if I lived nearby.

Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area

I had played this course about 10 to 12 years ago. I found it a challenge for my game, but well worth the experience. My problem with the course this time was that if I hit my ball into the rough, more than once it took me two shots to get out of the rough. The lesson: "Don't hit your ball into the rough!" That, of course, was my problem, not the problem of the golf course. The greens were in great shape and were reasonably fast. Views, especially from Hole #4 a very short and challenging par 3 with little margin for error, are spectacular. The pace of play was great as our group never had to wait for hit our shots except on #18 when the group ahead of us, with which we caught up on #18, was on the green. We had to wait for them to clear the green before hitting our shots. The wait was probably all of 60 to 90 seconds, hardly worth mentioning. If this course was closer to my home, I'd consider playing it more often. Hope to play it at least once a year in the future, if not more often.

Bunkers had a concrete type of sand in them. Almost glued to your club. A lot of short par 4s

The bunkers have river sand which crusts when wet making bunker shots more difficult than necessary. The ambiance could be improved with more trees.

Two negatives...Bunkers normally are filled with sand - theirs aren't and golf carts were routinely running out of juice before we did...couldn't complete 15 holes without calling in for reinforcements.
